We live in an increasingly secular society and while the only legal requirement for naming a child is to register their birth, the giving of their name in a formal ceremony is becoming more popular and can take the place of a religious ceremony.
This event can be a joyous gathering of family and friends to celebrate the arrival of a new life. It can take place close to the birth date or much later.
Children can be unpredictable so it is always wise to prepare for any eventuality such as sudden shyness or a last minute decision not to take part in the ceremony. Documents can be prepared as a record of the event but they have no legal standing.
